happy birthday

I won’t have access to the internet for a few days, so I’m posting this a day early.

Happy birthday, little brother.

I remember.

What do I remember? Crooked smile, goofy laugh, him eating cat food, him racing the neighbor, building the treehouse, making him eat a raw egg, him running around the living room on a bet, him pulling my hair so hard I bent over backwards, him cheating at cards, him wearing those stupid jams, him being my mother’s favorite, competing with him at swimming, his passion for UT when compared to my apathy towards A&M, him desperately wanting to gain weight, his smell, his skinny legs, the way he used to be able to stick out his stomach, him hiding his toys from his friends before they came over, him lighting non dairy creamer on fire, his love of wrestling, him mowing the lawn, him intercepting mail for me while I was away, him playing computer games, waiting at the school bus stop with him, waking him up on Christmas morning because I was so excited and he just wanted to sleep, how he hated being called Seany-boy, all the phone calls he got from girls, the way he looked out for Nicole, the way he looked out for mom, his disdain for dad, the way he would double check the tip when we ate out to make sure the server wasn’t being ripped off, how proud he was when he bought gifts for us, him sitting in the recliner in our apartment in San Francisco, bringing him the furniture we were getting rid of, the way he wouldn’t talk on the phone, how he wanted to be independent, the phone call from my dad, the way he looked in the casket, the sea of people at the memorial service, blow-drying my sister’s hair for the wake and funeral, buying shoes, getting a manicure, despair.
