a note

J is a wonderful husband. I love him dearly. He isn’t always the best about expressing his feelings, and he generally prefers humor to serious conversation. But that’s generally ok.

He wrote me a letter for my birthday that outshines any material thing he could have bought.

I want to frame it, to look at it every single day. He has said it is ok if I post it here, but I may choose to not leave it up permanently.

I will preface the beginning of the letter – we have an ongoing “joke” about me turning 27. It’s part joke, part deep-seated psychological need to not allow time to pass. My 27th birthday was the first after my brother’s death, and I didn’t (and still don’t) want to allow that distance to grow.

Mrs. Hope,

Happy 27th birthday. I know the last couple of years have sucked, so it’s only fitting that we aren’t counting them. I wanted to say a few things about what we’ve been through and are about to go through. First, I’m sorry. I’m sorry for being slow. I’m sorry for being impatient. I’m sorry my first response is usually a cynical one.

Second, thank you. Thank you for spending (almost) half your life with me. You really are all that I have. I shudder to think what I might be doing otherwise. I’m certain you are the reason I’m not alone, on the computer, wallowing in cheeseburger wrappers.

Thank you for doing all the work to get pregnant. Tests, probes, charts, shots, research. I really don’t deserve you. I’ll never be able to repay you.

Third, I want you to know that I’m with you no matter what. If you’ve felt otherwise, that’s my fault. This thing has made me re-evaluate myself and think about our future. I can’t wait to start a family with you.

Finally, I love you. I hope you have a good birthday. This will be your year.

Love,

J

  4. Mrs. Hope, I’m so glad you have such a great guy as your partner in life.

And I get what you mean about wanting to frame the note and look at it every day. D surprised me on Valentine’s Day by giving me a card which he handwrote one of the sweetest messages ever and it totally made me cry. I walked around the rest of the night holding the card to my chest and for the last week it’s sat on my nightstand where I’ve read it almost daily. These feelings are what life’s really about.

  5. He gets it. That is so important and valuable.
