gratitude

Mr. Hope thanked people this weekend. He thanked some of my dearest girlfriends for listening to me, hoping for me, praying for me, lighting candles for me, answering questions for me, and just plain dealing with me – whatever my mood – some since Sean died, some more recent with all of this infertility crap. He, of his own accord, arranged a spa day for us.

But he wasn’t done. After I got home, all relaxed and soothed, he took me to dinner at a lovely restaurant. Then he gave me a beautiful necklace.

He did all of this to thank me. Me. To thank me for doing the shots, the laminaria placements, the retrievals, the research. To thank me for working at the copy place with the funny name late at night for the insurance, to thank me for not giving up.

I told him that all of the stuff he thought of as difficult wasn’t and that the shots and the physical stuff didn’t really matter. He simply said, “I couldn’t have done it. And it all matters to me.”

He did all of this because he said it’s time to celebrate. It’s time to think of the infertility part of this as over. That this is a pregnancy – not really much different than any other pregnancy.

And then we named our tiny girl. The girl that is kicking and moving, much to my sheer delight. The girl that is growing, and making me grow with her. Our girl. Our daughter. BabyHope Claire.

I am the one who is grateful and lucky. So, so lucky.
